50 Years Since the Journey Began

National News

By early July after the release of the June issue of the Pennsylvania Gazette, national news coverage of the Committee for Reunion with England began to explode. In the next two months, more than three dozen newspaper articles were published in 15 different states. Seven of the articles appeared on the first page. The story reached nationwide, from Massachusetts to California, and Montana to Texas.

The first paper to mention the Committee was the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin in an opinion column by Rosie DeWolf, who appeared to enjoy the humor but also found a serious undertone. Another Philly journal, the Philadelphia Inquirer, published a short piece on July 18, then came a long article from the Old Gray Lady, the New York Times on July 20.

Soon after the New York Times ran an article, the story was put out by the Associated Press and Reuters, as well as Knight newspapers. Nearly two dozen articles were published on July 30, when the AP put a concise story on the wire service, which generally captured the satiric intent of the Committee. Some papers ran an accompanying cropped photo from the original Richmond Times-Dispatch story from March. Some of the errors in that original story were corrected (John was now listed as an advertising writer not a keypunch operator), but new ones were introduced (John’s middle initial was somehow changed from “N” to “T”).

The headlines ran the gamut from serious to tongue-in-cheek:
