For example, in one such <em>Minute<\/em>, comedian Jonathan Winters laughingly recounted the incident where Rebels threw three Tories into the James River near Norfolk, VA. He omitted the fact that two of the three men drowned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;The Many Problems Facing Our Country&#8221;: <\/strong>In 1975, the long list of problems included Watergate (Richard Nixon had resigned in disgrace just seven months earlier on August 9, 1974), the Vietnam War (which had been raging since 1963 and would soon end on April 30, 1975, with the fall of Saigon), the continuing Cold War, and inflation (spurred by the dramatic spike in oil prices after the 1973 OPEC embargo). The hapless President Gerald Ford seemed unable to cope with any of the issues, perhaps best epitomized by his <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Whip_Inflation_Now\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Whip Inflation Now<\/a> campaign and the ridiculous WIN buttons.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"406\" height=\"393\" src=\"http:\/\/501roseneath.com\/cre.501roseneath.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/WIN.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-84\" srcset=\"http:\/\/501roseneath.com\/cre.501roseneath.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/WIN.png 406w, http:\/\/501roseneath.com\/cre.501roseneath.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/WIN-300x290.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 406px) 100vw, 406px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;Corruption in high places&#8221;: <\/strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Watergate_scandal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Watergate Scandal<\/a> and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;55 mph speed limit&#8221;: <\/strong>In 1974, the United States imposed a national <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Maximum_Speed_Law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">speed limit of 55 miles per hour<\/a> in an attempt to conserve gasoline in response to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1973_oil_crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1973 OPEC oil embargo<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;The sins of the founding fathers are being visited upon the children&#8221;:<\/strong> A slanting reference to <em>Deuteromony <\/em>5:9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;Tarred and Feathered&#8221;:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tarring_and_feathering\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tarring and feathering<\/a> was a particularly heinous form of public humiliation and revenge against Loyalists during the American Revolution was the mob&#8217;s coating Tories with hot tar and then covering them with feathers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;Bicentennial Commissions&#8221;<\/strong>: In 1973, the U.S. Congress created the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Bicentennial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Revolution Bicentennial Administration<\/a> to develop celebrations for the 200th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and subsequent events during the Revolutionary War. Various state and local commissions planned events across the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;Bicentennial Cover-Up&#8221;: <\/strong>A slanted reference to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Watergate_scandal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Watergate Scandal<\/a> known for the two-year cover-up of the initial Watergate break-in, leading to the phrase &#8220;the cover-up is worse than the crime.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;Prodigal Son&#8221;: <\/strong>A reference to the parable in <em>Luke <\/em>15:11-32.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;Amnesty&#8221;: <\/strong>In 1974, President Gerald Ford began a program of conditional amnesty for draft dodgers during the Vietnam War. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;Bengal Lancers&#8221;:<\/strong> Regiments of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Indian_Army\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">British Indian Army<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;The Tory Torch&#8221;: <\/strong>The Committee for Reunion with England would begin publishing this newsletter in July 1975.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Committee for Reunion with England invited people to send letters and contributions to a mailbox at the <em>Richmond Mercury<\/em>&#8216;s offices at 16 E.
