Penn Gazette – Part 2

The next phase of the Committee for Reunion with England’s saga came in October 1975, when the Pennsylvania Gazette ran two long letters of complaint from alumni who were chagrined by the magazine’s running the Committee’s advertisement on the back cover of the June 1975 issue.

The first letter came from Ralph M. Kellogg (Wharton Class of 1918) from Norwalk, CT. Under the headline “Foul tirade,” the letter protested the “asinine statements” in the Committee’s advertisement. The full letter on page 6 of the Pennsylvania Gazette objected to the idea of reuniting with socialist England and implied that the real traitors of today were Ambrose and Gambill. Based on the ellipsis at the of the published letter, Mr. Kellogg’s tirade against the advertisement was longer than what the Gazette found room to publish.

A second letter from Mark T. Milnor, who graduated in 1914 with dual degrees from Wharton and Penn’s School of Law, started by complimenting the Gazette on the June 1975 issue but then called Ambrose and Gambill “two jokers,” adding “If anything, we have too damn many jokers in our Country right now.”

The Gazette editor noted that four other alumni had submitted letters objecting to the advertisement and noted that there had been reaction in the press in the New York Times, the Philadelphia Bulletin, and the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The Gazette also reported that the Committee for Reunion with England had published the first issue of its newsletter, The Tory Torch, and promised to have something to say about it in the Gazette’s November issue.
