Penn Gazette – Part 1 Soon after publishing the advertisement in the Richmond Mercury, the Committee for Reunion with England’s co-chairman, John Ambrose, sent a copy of the ad to the Pennsylvania Gazette, the alumni magazine of the University of Pennsylvania. John had graduated from the venerable Philadelphia institution (founded by Benjamin Franklin) in 1973. His faculty advisor from the Department of English, Dr. Marshall Lederer, had been serving as a contributing editor with the monthly publication. A brief letter from John was published in the May 1975 issue (I can’t find a copy unfortunately), and then a second letter was sent when the May issue showed a cover for the June issue that would focus on the Bicentennial. That June issue featured two surprises. John’s letter of complaint was published as the lead epistle in the “Letters” column: The Editor’s Note referencing the back cover was a full re-publication of the original advertisement from the Richmond Mercury! The ad was now getting a national distribution. Next: National News
